Prologue

The last thing I could remember was a blinding pain. I felt like my head had exploded, then there was nothing but blackness. I tried to remember what I was doing before the pain began but it was like trying to figure out an over exposed photograph. There were shapes and shadows, but for the most part, it was unfocused and impossible to make out.

Where am I? I thought, but I couldn’t remember as the blackness took me once again.

Suddenly I felt cold and wet. It was raining, well I think it was raining. I tried to open my eyes but they didn’t seem to work. I tried to move my arms and legs. I pushed with all my might but they didn’t respond.

What the hell is wrong with me? I screamed inside my head. I tried to cry out for help but I couldn’t seem to form a sound, much less a word. Once more the blackness came and I stopped fighting it.

“Miss,” a man’s voice broke into the darkness. His voice was full of concern. I could feel his hand lift mine and press his fingers against my wrist. Then he leaned in over me, and I knew he was checking to see if I was still breathing. “Miss. It’s okay. Help is on the way. Just stay with me.”

Suddenly I felt warm. Something was covering me. 1 could smell something…aftershave perhaps.

“Everything is going to be okay,” the voice in the darkness whispered in my ear. “Can you hear me?”

“Ouchhhhh!” I groaned in a bear whisper.

“That’s it,” the voice said and I could hear the relief in his voice. “You stay with me. I need you to fight.”

“Mmmmm,” I groaned again as the faint sound of sirens could be heard in the distance.

“Can you tell me your name?” He whispered as he leaned in closer to me. He had a kind voice, it made me feel safe.

I tried to talk but the words were all jumbled in my head.

Why can’t I tell him my name? I thought as I became frustrated. Just say the words. My name is…My name is…What the hell is my name? Why can’t I remember it?

“Stay with me,” the voice whispered again, but it was just too hard. I was tired. I needed to sleep. The darkness fell again and I gave up fighting it.

Review
5 Tears Running down my face.

This book had me in tears from the start. This is the first book that I have read by Beverley Hollowed, I think I have been missing out. Finding Scarlett was pulling at my heart from the moment that I started reading it.
Oliver Caldwell is a broken man that has emotionally cut himself off from family and friends. He is a detective investigating the deaths of several women by a serial killer. While driving, Oliver sees something suspicious on the side of the road. As he double backs, he hears a gunshot and sees a car pulling away. His gut wants him to follow the car, but instinct has him checking the area that he has just passed. There on the ground is another woman shot in the head by his serial killer, but this one is still alive. Oliver can’t let her slip on to death.
Scarlet Doe is the only victim of the serial killer to survive. After weeks in a coma she wakes to the most beautiful green eyes she has ever seen. At least she thinks they must be the most beautiful green eyes she has ever seen because she can’t remember anything before waking up.
This is an emotionally charged romantic thriller. The characters are complex and in some parts, just plain stupid. They say love makes you do dumb things, well that is true with Scarlett, because what great story doesn’t have a heroine that puts herself in terrible danger because she is trying to do the right thing.

Excerpt
The scent clashes with the harsh aroma of sesame seed oil, coffee, and chai tea, burning the inside of my nostrils. I find myself sniffing deeper without meaning to, breathing him in—though I don’t dare look up from the book lying open on my lap, and I never stop reading aloud. “These violent delights have violent ends...” My voice trails off as my grip on the page slips, accidentally smudging a neat row of printed font. Just like that, Shakespeare becomes a black stain on my sweat-soaked fingers, and I can’t stop thinking the same thing over and over again. It has to be a lot of blood. So thick, that the smell churns my stomach. I have to breathe in through my mouth, which doesn’t really help me escape the other flavors wafting from his corner. Smoke. Not exactly like that from a cigarette…it’s more pungent than that. Acrid—as if someone dumped lit charcoal on my tongue, and I’m instantly reminded of the time Rory took me to his precinct’s gun range on some misguided attempt to help me “break out of my shell.” I will always remember that sound. The weight of the weapon in the palm of my hand. The smell that filled my lungs the moment I’d pulled the trigger. The man watching me from the back of the semi-crowded restaurant smells like blood. He tastes like gun smoke. He has eyes like midnight that watch impatiently as I fidget beneath the spotlight. “And in their triumph die.” Scattered applause erupts from the audience, but it’s noticeably halfhearted. Rather than read one of my own poems, I’d recited a classic; the ultimate cop-out. Boo. Hiss. Snore. On another night, I’d die of embarrassment and swear to try harder next time. Tonight, I’m shaking for an entirely different reason as I scramble up from the stool and make my way off stage. May, the host of Feng Noodle House’s poetry night, smiles at me. I try my best to smile back, but I can’t quite make my lips move when my eyes are too busy drifting in the opposite direction. To him. His hands are hidden within the pockets of a black leather jacket, which shields most of his bulky frame. He’s paired it with a simple pair of jeans…but there are even darker splotches speckling the denim. They catch my eye and send my brain scrambling to come up with a logical explanation. The result of the earlier rainstorm? Or the cause of that fucking smell? Breathe. The silent command helps. I suck in air and blow it out as I make my way through the narrow dining room while someone else takes the vacated stage. Her poem is original, and she recites each word clearly, displaying a distinct flow—though I only hear the opening line: “Life is but a series of cruel intentions…” It’s still enough to resonate inside me, more deeply than Shakespeare’s words ever could as I shove my tattered copy of Romeo and Juliet into my bag. Life is a series of cruel intentions. Some inflicted by others. Some we inflict upon ourselves. Like the way I take the time to button up my coat before palming the brass handle of the main door. For a moment, it’s almost like I’m a normal woman preparing for a normal walk home from a night of humiliating herself for the umpteenth time. A normal woman who isn’t counting the heavy, abnormal footsteps following in her wake. One. Two. Ten. Fifty. It’s like my shadow has substance, matching me step for step with every inch that I travel toward my apartment. Some nights, it’s easier to pretend that the sounds are just from the many other commuters heading home—I’m not the only person in the world, after all. If I try hard enough at make-believe, I can imagine that there is no specter who creeps closer once my apartment building comes into view. Neither is there any suspiciously warm air ghosting the back of my neck. Or the hand that shoots out the moment I reach for the battered door to my building, pinning it in place. “Will you let me in tonight?” The voice is gruff—male—and the name he calls me isn’t in English. On his tongue, it sounds like “woo deep moie.” Butterfly girl. Altogether, it’s such a cheesy line that I choke on something that could have been a laugh in another setting. Tonight, however, when paired with the blood—God, I can taste it now that he’s this close—the words take on a bitter edge. There’s a challenge hidden in his tone. A challenge that’s always there, no matter how many times we play out the same scenario. “Have you wised up, Amy?” I mull that question over. It’s late, and it’s quiet enough to hear the sounds that drift through the paper-thin walls of the building. Someone coughs. A woman laughs. A television blares. My fingers tremble as they clutch my canvas messenger bag, and I shift it to my other shoulder in an attempt to hide the nerves. “You’re afraid,” he deduces, each word heating the back of my neck like the blast from a furnace. “You’re bleeding,” I counter, lowering my voice to a whisper. Drip. Drip. I swear I can hear each telltale drop hitting the pavement while a familiar urgency shakes me to the core. Let him in, damn it! For some reason, it’s so much harder this time to wrestle one of my hands from my side and use it to swat his away. As he withdraws, I curl my grip around the metal handle and pull the door open, revealing a narrow hallway, painted gray. “Come in.” I choke out the words, but he’s already on my heels, driving me up the three flights of stairs to my flat.

Kill Shot by Lani Lynn Vale

Title: Kill Shot
Series: Code 11 KPD SWAT #6
Author: Lani Lynn Vale
Genre: Romantic Suspense
Release Date: October 2, 2015
Bennett had the world in the palm of his hands when he was sixteen, then he allowed his dick to do the thinking for him.
That one night changed his life, giving him a child that would forever alter the course of his life, and an ex that was a crazy nut case on the best of days.
With the help of his parents, he went into the Navy, becoming the SEAL that he always wanted to be. However, with that came a price.
A price he wasn’t willing to pay anymore once his little girl started to realize why he wasn’t there. So he came home and joined the local SWAT team, starting his life anew, just his daughter and him.
Then he meets the cute little physician’s assistant that looks down at him like one would an annoying fly, and he finally realizes just what he’s been missing.
Something that takes his mind off of the challenge of everyday life. Someone that dares him to be a better father and police officer.
And Lennox is one hell of a motivator.
Their relationship starts off rocky as the two of them circle each other like opponents ready to do combat rather than two civil adults. Every day brings a new battle for the two of them to overcome, and before they realize it, they’ll be fighting for each other instead of against each other.
Because there’s one woman who doesn’t want either one of them to be happy…especially not together.

“Bennett?” Lennox asked softly into the dark.
I turned my head until I was facing her.
My beard tickled her mouth and chin as we came face to face, mouth to mouth.
“Yeah, Nox?” I whispered tiredly.
“I fucking love you,” she whispered fiercely.
I blinked, all tiredness leaving my pores as I said, “What?”
“You heard me, you big bastard. You made me fucking love you,” she spat.
I laughed.
She sounded so irritated by the fact that I had no other recourse but to laugh.
“You don’t have to sound so outraged by it,” I laughed.
She made a sound in the back of her throat, then threw herself at me.
I landed on my back, and laughed, pulling her until she was straddling my body.
Her sweet ass was pressed against my hips, and my cock, which was more than a little out of control, was pillowed in between the cheeks.
She leaned down, pressing her mouth against mine.
“If you break me, I’ll never let you forget it,” she whispered.
Suddenly serious, I moved my hands up her arms, past her neck, and up to her head.
Cupping it with both hands, I did a half curl until I was mouth to mouth with her once again.
“I’ll never let anything hurt you. I can’t see the future. I can’t tell you how tomorrow will look for us. All I can tell you is that I’ll never treat you with anything but respect. I’ll never let you down, and I’ll never be unfaithful. If we are happy, then I’ll be here. But if it does go bad, which I don’t see happening, then I’ll leave you with a piece of me. You’ll forever have me. My support. My caring. And I want the same promise from you. Because Reagan loves you already. She asks about you every day. And I want her to know you without you holding back. You’re mine, and I’m yours until we both decide differently. I’ll never leave you without talking it out with you first. We’ll both have to be on the same page. But honey,” I said, a promise in my voice. “I don’t see this going bad, because I fucking love you, too.”
I felt a tear meet my lips right before I smashed my mouth against hers.
Her lips tasted of salty tears, but I didn’t care.
Neither did she.
I’m a married mother of three. My kids are all under 5, so I can assure you that they are a handful. I’ve been with my paramedic husband now for ten years, and we’ve produced three offspring that are nothing like us. I live in the greatest state in the world,
Texas.

Hilarious, entertaining and especially hot! Those are the three best words I could use to

describe not only the relationship existing between the characters, between Bennett and Lennox

but also the ingenuity behind the writing of Lani Lynn Vale. I absolutely loved this book and even

though it's the sixth part of a series, I hardly felt thrown in the middle of war zone and left to

defend myself while hoping for the best outcome. The fears were realistic: fears of a father, of a

victim, of a child and of a family; the love surrounds the characters but between Bennett and

Lennox, it isn't at first sight, which is refreshing. There is a medical diagnosis that needs to be

controlled daily which further adds the realistic and relatability aspects in this novel. From cover

to cover, I kept finding myself giggling, drawing the attention of my entourage asking me what

was so funny and what was happening in the current scene. In the beginning of each chapter,

Lani Lynn Vale always adds quotes, whether they be hilarious or not, seemingly tying in the

mood of the next few pages. One final word: AMAZING and I highly recommend it.
