Excerpt:
Makayla had been positive Armand was going to kiss her. Instead he'd set her aside and almost seemed angry that she had trusted him. Their ride back to the mainland had been quiet and almost tense. What had caused the sudden change? The kiss on the cheek? Everything had certainly gone to hell after that, but she could have sworn he wanted her.
She brushed the hair from her face. What did she know about men anyway? It had been two years since her last relationship and it had failed. She had failed. The entire idea was a mistake and she should just chalk it up to a lesson learned and move on. Tears stung her eyes. She thought she saw something good and decent in Armand. Even if only for a one-night stand, she thought he would have catered to her every need, giving her something her past relationships always lacked. Maybe she should just hire the deed done. Women did it all the time now and why not? Their sexual urges were the same as a man's, only the rules were different.
Half an hour later, they were back at the dock and Armand helped her off the boat.
“I'll escort you home.”
Really? She pursed her lips. “I'm sure you have lots to do. I can see myself home. Thank you again for a nice day.” She spun and started to walk away, but he was on her heels.
“I wasn't asking.” He moved in beside her.
Kayla kept her gaze ahead. She could feel the heat rising up her neck. “Suit yourself.” If he wanted to walk with her then fine, but she refused to converse with him. The mixed signals he kept sending were making her dizzy. He went from seductive to demanding to angry with god-knows-what. The confusion running through her brain gave her a headache.
Ten silent minutes later, she finally reached her front door. She slipped the key into the lock and turned the handle. The door opened to reveal a darkened room and she could hardly wait to escape back into it. She wondered if the entire trip was a waste. Good manners had her turning around to face the sexy man who'd towered beside her all day.
“Thank you again. It was lovely.”
His hands gripped her upper arms and his body pinned her against the doorjamb. His lips crashed down on hers. Bruising. Demanding. His tongue pushed passed and swept into her mouth. He tasted of danger and sin and she wanted to swallow him whole. Every lean hard muscle of his chest pushed into her breasts causing them to ache. Her nipples pebbled against her bathing suit and begged to have his hot tongue glide across them. His erection, thick and hard, pressed into her belly. She wanted to touch him, but with her arms pinned at her side she could do nothing except remind herself to breathe.
He consumed her.
Armand nipped her bottom lip then pulled away causing her to moan. Even in the dusk of the evening, she could see the desire in his eyes. It burned her soul.
“Querida, never trust a strange man again. I will be your one exception,” he whispered. “Do you understand?”
She swallowed. Her throat parched from the inferno brewing inside her like a wicked storm. “Y-Yes.”
“Good.” He released her then backed away. “Go inside now. I'll pick you up tomorrow evening for dinner.”
“O-Okay.”
Kayla stepped past the entry and closed the door behind her. She leaned against the cool wood both to quench the fire that raged within and for support. She brought her fingers to her swollen lips and could almost feel him still pressing against her.
“What the hell just happened?”
Her legs were like Jell-O and her heart raced. She hadn't expected him to kiss her. Not after the way things had ended. Even in her surprise, her body couldn't help but respond. She had never been kissed like that before. It had been raw. His heat had seeped through her skin igniting something deep inside her.
“So that's what it's like? Holy hell.” She pushed herself off the door and walked across the living room on wobbly legs. She needed a cold shower. Ice cold to be exact.

Excerpt:
Usually, Erik portrayed a man mindful of his astuteness, cunning in every way. The trepidation of his plight made him more aware of his twisted ways. He served a purpose while Roger was around because of his lack of morals, his willingness to do what it took for acceptance. Now, with thoughts of remorse in his gut, Erik decided to attempt to do something because he was an integral part in the creation of the undead virus.
The heels of Erik’s loafers echoed in the darkness when he stepped onto the stained concrete floors. He leaned up against the door as it closed, the only sounds being his erratic breathing and the click of the lock. Once he located the light switch, his gaze darted all over the room. It wasn’t as posh as the conference room. There were simple lines, an uncomplicated design scheme…
His gaze paused on the wall-sized, glass front mahogany cabinet filled with every kind of handgun, rifle, or knife one could ever want. It was a blaring reminder of how much his life was at risk.
As the cotton feel overtook his mouth, Erik tried to swallow, but his throat would not work through the dryness. He stalked to the mini refrigerator. Just as he thought about opening it, he changed his mind. He needed to leave everything as it was because Roger would definitely know if there was a bottle of water missing.
Glancing at Roger’s desk, he noted a hunting knife, dried blood all over the long blade, stabbed into the wood’s surface. As quietly as he could, Erik walked around the desk and sat in the chair. The leather softly creaked under his slender frame. Careful not to touch the knife, not knowing if the blood was tainted, he reached for the laptop and pulled it toward him.
The room felt as if it tremored. Confused, Erik gripped the edge of the desk and looked around, concerned about an earthquake. Then he realized it came from within his own body.
“Chuffing hell,” he whispered. Heat bloomed throughout his body, so he unfastened the top button of his shirt.
One thing was certain. Roger put the fear of God in people, and Erik was feeling the pressure.

“Then what’s stopping you?” she whispered.
“Love, did I hear you correctly?” Disbelief was written on his face.
She gazed into his stormy eyes. “I will admit, I’m not the type who sleeps with a man on the first date.” She looked down at his chest. “Hell, not even the second or third.” Her eyes moved back up to meet his. “I can’t say what it is, this connection I feel. I just know I need you.”

Excerpt from WWII romance:

The pilot with wheat-colored hair put his elbows on the counter and leaned toward her. “I could buy thirty loaves of bread at home for that much lettuce.”
“But you are not home, soldier. You are here, in Benevento, and a sticky bun is 100 lire.” She meant to be rude but his soft brown gaze made her heart race as if she’d just chased Dante across the field. His smile went to his eyes, adding crinkles to the corners, and turned her own lips up. “The cost of supplies is very expensive these days, as you know.”
“So I’ve heard. Give me five,” he said with a wink. “Maybe I can sweet talk the captain into putting me back into a plane.”
“Save your money, Ken. Your ears obviously ain’t got any better in the last ten minutes,” he answered, rubber-necking over the counter. “Get a load of that landing gear.”
Dante growled again but this time showed sharp, white teeth. “I don’t think he likes you much, Bob.”
“Well I don’t care for him, neither. Give me two of those, and we’ll get out of your hair.”
The men paid for the rolls and walked outside. She headed into the kitchen when that quiet, deep voice stopped her. “I’d like to apologize for my friend. He’s not a bad Joe once you get to know him.”
“I don’t think I care to,” she said without turning around.
“It looks like I may be making regular trips through your town. Do you work here often?” His tone dripped like honey from a ladle and poured over her; she felt her body turn toward him even as her brain told her “no.”
“My family owns it. I am here every day.”
“So your father is Guido?” He had resumed his place at the counter, balanced on his elbows again, inviting her back without a word.
She found herself leaning on the counter from the other side. “How do you know my father?”
“The sign says Guido’s Café.”
She laughed. “Yes, it does. So you are no private eye, eh?”
He whistled then. “You’d make Betty Grable green with envy when you smile. It makes those blue eyes sparkle like a fresh-cut diamond. You should do that more often.”
Her eyes lowered, embarrassed at the compliment and the image of the American pinup girl in a bathing suit. “You should go catch up with your friends.”
“My name is Ken Lawrence,” he said and held out his hand.
“Antonia Capriotti,” she replied and took his hand. A tingle shot down her center and curled her toes. “It is nice to meet you.”
“You’re blushing. Mmm, beautiful and modest. That’s a rare find, you know.” He held firmly onto her hand. “And who is this?”
She looked down at the silent collie. He hadn’t made a noise when this man reached across the counter and touched her. Odd. “Dante, our protector.”
“You need one, with mugs like Bob I suppose.” He made a kissing noise in the dog’s direction and slapped the counter. Dante jumped up, feet on the edge and barked. Ken reached over and scratched the dog behind his ears. “Good boy, you look like my old Schotzie.”
“You have a dog?”
“I did. Old man hit fourteen just before I left. Mom sent me his collar when he passed.”
“I’m sorry, they are just like one of the family, si?”
“Yes they are,” he agreed, giving Dante one more pat before he tipped his hat. “I hope to see you again soon, Antonia.”
She hugged the collie as the Yank left, a swagger to his walk. “What do you know that I don’t, hmm? I trust your instincts better than mine. Perhaps we’ll consider more conversation with this Americano if he returns.”

Excerpt:
Joe couldn’t believe what Sam was telling him. “You’re kidding, right? You can’t possibly be serious.”
“I am serious. Elizabeth is coming with us to the Christmas party as your date, and you need to get a move on so we’re not late.”
“Absolutely not. I’m not taking a date to our employee Christmas party, especially her. She doesn’t even like me in that way. We’re two very different people.”
“Well, she must like you somewhat, she agreed to go,” Sam replied as he opened the entryway closet, retrieved Joe’s overcoat and handed it to him.
Joe shook his head. He wasn’t quite sure what to do. He couldn’t cancel with her at this point in the game that would be too rude. Yet, did he have the courage to show up with a date at his employee Christmas party? What will they think? On the other hand, it wasn’t like he hadn’t considered the idea of getting to know Elizabeth better, and helping her realize there was more to life than work, especially after the conversation they shared a couple of days after Thanksgiving.
Joe followed Sam to Elizabeth’s where they impatiently waited in the entryway for their dates to finish getting ready. His brain anxiously worked to find a way out of the situation. Nothing, outside of rude, presented itself.
The sound of footsteps caught his attention, and he glanced in that direction to find Elizabeth floating down the stairway, light on her feet like an angel descending from the sky. Her milky white skin looked soft and smooth against the bright red dress that hugged her thin, proportionate body. He couldn’t help but wonder how her skin might feel against his fingertips. Her big, bright, emerald green eyes caught his gaze. He tried to pull it away but it was as if she wouldn’t release him. She was absolutely breathtaking.
“Elizabeth, you look lovely,”
She smiled softly. “Thank you.”
She retrieved her long wool coat from the entryway closet. He immediately took it from her hands and held it open for her. Peering over her shoulder he caught a glimpse of her pale, soft-looking breasts. His heart skipped a beat. Raw, primal need rushed through his veins. He hadn’t been this stirred up in a long time. He tore his gaze from her breasts as she turned toward the door to exit the house.
Joe willed the rhythm of his heartbeat back to normal as he followed behind Elizabeth. He wasn’t sure he’d ever seen anything so beautiful as her, descending down those steps toward him a minute ago. He shut his eyes for a moment, squeezing them tightly as if that would help to extinguish the heavenly vision of her that kept replaying in his mind. A vision like this would only lead to complication; he was sure of it.
He opened the back driver’s side door of Sam’s bimmer for Elizabeth. Her jacket opened as she slid in, allowing him to catch a glimpse of her sexy, shapely legs. His heartbeat spiraled out of control again. He needed to get a hold of himself before his heart exploded altogether.
He shut the door and walked around the car and entered through the back passenger side door.
His friend started the car and backed out of the driveway. The banter in the front seat of the bimmer was nonstop between Holly and Sam. Joe simply listened to them and watched their interaction. He couldn’t help but notice how Sam gently held and caressed Holly’s hand as they rested their arms on the center counsel. They seemed so relaxed with each other. He wondered if he would ever hold a woman’s hand in his again like he did with Amanda.
A crater the size of the Grand Canyon filled his chest. Oh how he missed her. He’d hoped the pain would fade with time, but there were still moments where it seemed like she’d been taken from him just yesterday.
He shook his head. His thoughts shifted to Elizabeth and the party. Worry coursed through his veins. What are my employees going to think when they see me with another woman?

Excerpt
He eyed the therapist. There was something calming about Tom. Kinda reminded him of his dad. Funny. After working hard to forget Ally and their life together, in a few short minutes, this stranger had forced those doors open. If she were here, she would be clapping her hands like a stupid seal right now. “I’m willing to give it a try.”
“Do you feel comfortable sharing what happened?”
No.
He took another swig of water. “She disappeared two years ago. No one’s heard or seen her since.”
“How have you survived her disappearance?”
Dave fiddled with the lid of the bottle and focused on the paisley area rug. “It’s been hard. Really hard.” His voice sounded hoarse even to his own ears.
It had been a while since he’d talked about the disappearance and opening Pandora’s box hurt like hell. Yet for some reason, he found himself prying the lid, wanting to let the demons out.
“She was beautiful, and God, I loved her. She used to tell me to take her off the pedestal. That I’d wake up one day and be disappointed. After eight years of marriage, I still had it bad for her. How many husbands can say that?”
Tom nodded, encouragingly.
“I was so proud she was mine. She was amazing in every way…as a wife, a friend—smart, funny, the whole package, and there was nowhere on earth I’d rather be than with her.”
He blinked back the emotion and fast-forwarded to the morning two years ago. “She disappeared on March twenty-third. I got home from work about four thirty that morning to an empty apartment. At first, I thought she’d left me again, but that didn’t make any sense. So I made some phone calls, then drove to her office. Her Lexus, purse and keys—even her shoes—were in the parking lot. But no Ally.”
As many times as the story had been shared, he should be able to recite it automatically, but today was different. His voice cracked and the waterworks he thought were over tried to rush to the surface. Dave slammed his lids shut and pushed the words through. “I called the police. The rest is history.”
“How have you held up through this?”
Dave rubbed the wetness away and continued. “No words. I keep thinking if I’d been home that night this wouldn’t have happened.”
“Do you believe you could have prevented it?”
“No, probably not. But I let her down. Didn’t protect her.”
He accepted the Kleenex Tom handed him and wiped his face dry. His head lowered and voice soft, he recounted his hell. “They investigated her clients, everyone had an alibi. People came in and out of the house for weeks. The media plastered information everywhere. Calls poured in about bodies, and each time, I wished I were dead. I couldn’t sleep. Eat. Breathe. My life was gone. Two years later, here we are, no news, no leads, nothing. She vanished from the world.”
Emotion sat heavy on his chest, choking him and making it impossible to speak. After an eternity of silence, Tom’s firm hand gripped his arm.
“I can’t imagine how hard that must have been for you.”

Still is.

Reviews for The Second Wife:

The Second Wife is one of those rare novels that will lurk in the back of your mind for weeks. With stunning precision, Kishan Paul throws the reader into a world of clandestine organizations and brutal politics. The gripping characters wrench your heart and make you cringe with fear. A rollercoaster of suspense and emotion not to be missed.
--Aubrey Wynne Author of Dante’s Gift and Rolf’s Quest

Kishan Paul’s writing shines in this beautifully written psychological thriller filled with heart-gripping emotion as the heroine unearths an inner strength she didn’t know she possessed.
– Cait Jarrod, Bestselling Author

"The Second Wife is a poignant story of love, domestic violence, and mental strength. It grabs you by the throat and doesn't let go until you've finished the last page. No wait, it doesn't let go at all… I had the pleasure of betareading it, and the wide range of emotions it stirred in me are still right under the surface."
– Lea Bronsen  award winning author of The Perfect Shoot

“This is a gripping story, brilliantly woven from start to finish. I’ll never forget Ally. She’s as real to me as anyone else because her story isn’t some forgettable fictional work. No way you are walking away from this one the same way. I actually took a break between this novel and my next one. I wasn’t ready to begin another journey just yet. Amazing work, Kishan Paul.”
Kristen Shanchez, reader
