Blurb
This is not made for TV. This is the raw, brutal underground of no-holds-barred combat. Inside the cage there is nothing but me and the pain I inflict on those who dare enter. In the cage, I never have to worry about anyone but myself. Yet, when she began standing outside of the cage, everything changed. I was no longer fighting for the money or the glory – I was fighting for her.

Excerpt #1
“Are you just stupid?” I probably would have gone on, but she wrapped her arms around herself and glared up at me.
“Stop yelling at me!” she screamed.  She turned away, but I saw her reach up with the back of her hand to swoop underneath her eyes.
Shit.
I turned slightly away from her and practically bit down on my tongue to keep myself from saying anything else.  I brought my fisted hands up against my stomach and tried to pull the tension inside of myself, work through it, and calm down.  I could hear her crying combined with choked breaths and sniffles.
“Fuck,” I mumbled under my breath.  I was starting to come off the fighting high I had been on—the tears might have helped with that—and my stomach felt tight.
After three long, deep breaths, I looked back to the girl on the ground and saw her frantically rubbing at her eyes and cheeks.  She didn’t look at me as she reached out and pulled her mostly empty bag close to her.  She looked inside and then looked around her at all her things on the ground.
“Sorry,” I mumbled.  I wasn’t all that great at apologies, and I figured now wasn’t going to be much different.  I’d obviously upset her with all my shitty comments, though.  “I didn’t mean to…I just…”
I stopped talking.  I didn’t know what to say, and I felt bad about yelling at her.  She looked at me all red-eyed with tears staining her cheeks.
“Just don’t do that shit anymore.”  I let out a big sigh.
She nodded once and then reached out to grab something off the ground near her and shoved it back into the bag.  From the amount of stuff scattered all over the street, my estimate on the size of the so-called purse wasn’t too far off.  There was an umbrella, a little flashlight, a bunch of tubes and bottles, and at least a half dozen pens.  As I looked around some more, I saw a small notebook, a paperback book, keys, a bottle of hand lotion that was nowhere near travel sized, a stack of tissues wrapped up in a Ziploc bag, two sets of earbuds, and a checkbook.  There was also a whole pile of ponytail holders, bobby pins, and those little hair-holder-things that looked like teeth.
There was shit from her bag from one side of the fucking street to the other.
She started crawling around, gathering it all up, and cramming it back inside, which gave me a fabulous view of her ass in the short-shorts style waitress uniform the place up the street usually demanded.  I could kind of see how she might have thought she could use the bag as a weapon—there had been more stuff in there than really should have been able to fit.  I looked around on the ground to see if there was an actual kitchen sink, or at least part of one, but I didn’t see anything metal.  There was something that looked like a small rock, though.
“How do you even carry that thing around?” I asked.
“What?”
“That…that purse-bag-thingy there,” I said, pointing and shaking my finger at it.  I wouldn’t have admitted it, but the whole idea of the thing scared me, and I wasn’t sure why.  I felt like if I got too close to it I might get sucked in, never to be seen again.  “It’s insane.”
Her eyes became little slits as she looked up to me.
“There is nothing wrong with my purse!” she growled.
“It’s huge,” I said.
“It has everything I need in it.”
“It has everything you and ten of your friends could need for a week,” I replied with a laugh.  “I know there are people who carry Chihuahuas in their purse, but you could fit a Dane in there.”

Excerpt #2

When I got to the top of the stairs, I immediately saw a figure leaning against the outside of the fence and looking back and forth down the street quickly.  Each time the head turned, a long brown pony tail bobbed around, and strands of hair got caught in the chain links.  If the short-shorts and Fin’s logo on the shirt weren’t enough to go on, the gigantic, evil handbag gave her away.
“What the fuck?” I snarled through the fence.
Tria startled and looked at me, turning quickly on her heel and holding up her keys clenched in her fist.  I tilted my head to one side and raised an eyebrow at her.  What was she going to do, wave them around at me from the other side of the fence?
“I’m pretty sure that was not meant to take the place of a ride,” I said, nodding toward the keys in her hand.
“You scared the shit out of me!” Tria yelled.  She adjusted the mega-monster purse on her shoulder and ran her hand through her hair.  “The girl who was driving me got another job.  She just walked out today, and there wasn’t anyone else on my shift with a car.”
“So you’re walking down this street again?” I yelled.  I slammed my palms into the chain links, making the whole side of metal rattle.  She jumped away, stammering.
“I…I…”
I didn’t give her much chance to finish.  I was livid.
“After what happened the last time?  Seriously, Tria?”  I paced over to the edge of the building and back to the fence again.  My fingers wrapped around the links and yanked.  “You do have a fucking death wish, don’t you?”
“I do not!”
“Then why are you being so stupid?” I screamed.  I planted my feet right where they were, and my heart thumped audibly in my chest.
“I was trying to find you!” she yelled back.
“Well, why didn’t you come in the fucking bar?” I tossed my hands up into the air.  “Is there not a big ass poster right there in your face saying exactly where I am on Friday nights?”
“I tried,” Tria said with a glare.  “The bouncer wouldn’t let me in.”
“Why not?”
“I’m only twenty,” she said with a shrug.
There was something about that news that flipped a switch in my head.  I knew she looked young, but I didn’t realize how young.  The idea that she was out here on her own, trying to make a go in this place without even being old enough to get into a bar killed my anger and made me feel something a little odd as well.  Respect?  Maybe even pride?
Whatever it was, it also hardened my dick.

“My gaze drifted from her eyes to her mouth and then back again.  I waited for her lips to part to tell me to stop, but all she did was moisten them quickly with her tongue.  I brought my head close to hers-almost touching-and paused again.  She lowered her eyes to my mouth, her lips parted slightly, and I could see her chest moving faster with her rapid breathing.  I didn’t need any further prompting.”

Excerpt

Fear struck through me. I hated the conversation directed to me, particularly when there were strangers involved. I could have cursed Tori. She knew better than to put me on the spot like this. I could just see her smirking face across the table from underneath my lashes as my throat started to constrict.

“You’re more than welcome to come along and watch. I encourage people to come along and see for themselves what it’s all about.” Oh, there was that voice again.

I was torn. I didn’t want to look up. I didn’t want to see the embarrassment and the man with the beautiful voice looking uncomfortable when he realised what my face looked like.

Surely there was a limit to the torture?

Manners, fear, self-consciousness all warred within me.

The silence around me was deafening. I could tell they were all waiting. I could feel three sets of eyes on me watching and wondering if I was actually going to respond. Finally I took a deep breath. What did it matter if he rejected me? It had happened before, and it would happen again. I could do this. It would hurt, but I was no stranger to pain, both physical and emotional.

Very slowly I raised my chin and turned just slightly towards him. I didn’t say anything. I couldn’t because my throat was closed in fear and uncertainty.

The first thing I noticed was the dark jeans that hung on narrow hips, then a white T-shirt that emphasised his flat belly and defined pecs. Bravely, I raised my eyes a little higher and the pecs ran into a set of wide shoulders. There was a hint of a tattoo peeking out from under one of his short sleeves. It only made his bicep look more delicious and enticing.

I took one final harsh intake of air and allowed my eyes to complete their journey. They travelled up and up the column of his corded neck to his wide angular jaw.

His full lips were slightly turned up in what looked like a half smile or was it amusement? I could only image how it would look once the shock registered when he saw my face.

Above those lips, that looked far too sensual for any man, was a long straight nose with a hint of a flare to the nostrils. The knot in my stomach tightened even further as I finally tilted my head back far enough so my eyes could meet his.

Every muscle in my body was tensed waiting for the shock, horror and embarrassment I was about to see, once my scars registered with his brain. It was an involuntary reaction I realised. Nobody could hide it, no matter how hard they tried. It was just the shock and surprise. I don’t blame them for their reactions, it just hurt that was all.

I raised my eyelids that final few millimetres and forced my eyes to focus on his. Right then and there the world stopped spinning for me. Time halted. My sisters faded into the background and I looked into the eyes of one of the most compelling people I had ever seen. Oh, he was handsome, but he was so much more.

But that was not what had me struck dumb—nope that wasn’t it.

It was his eyes—those bottomless pools of black onyx. I did a mental double take. For eyes so dark they should have appeared cold and icy.

But they didn’t—they weren’t cold at all. They were warm and rich. Right then was the first time I could recall in the last five years, a stranger looking at me with warmth in their eyes. Not shock, not pity, not embarrassment. It was warmth.

The shock paralysed me. I didn’t know what to do or how to act. My brain was shorting out. Nothing made sense. Somewhere in the back of my mind I registered my leg being kicked under the table, but even that didn’t break through my connection with those eyes. I wanted to swim in them, wrap myself in their warmth and burrow down tight.

I have no idea how much time passed.

Finally, he thrust his hand forward to me and without conscious thought, I placed my hand in his to shake. What happened next shocked me even more.

He lent across the table and pulled me into a loose hug and brushed his lips against my left cheek.

My brain was fried and my nerves were all misfiring. Nothing made sense. I was so far out of my comfort zone.

He pulled back slowly and gave me a smile that I’ll remember for the rest of my life.

Then he spoke and his words seemed to swirl around me in a caress.

“Hi Eden. I’m Xander Todd.” Suddenly, I realised I had no box to categorise him into.

“I thought you were going to show me some fancy flying kicks or something,” I said petulantly, watching him closely with my hands raised in the same defensive pose he carried. I began moving with him as he slowly started to circle me. “Not my thing.” “No? What is your thing then?” My arm instinctively moved away when his twitched. “My first discipline is Ju-jitsu. I’m more dangerous on the ground grappling and holding.” “Ha, so you do enjoy a good fumble and roll around on the floor then.” He shot me a look of heat before he quickly refocused. “There is only one time I enjoy rolling around, and it isn’t in a fighting arena.” I jumped back when he lunged forward. His eyes got a mischievous glint to them, and he stepped back, dropping his arms. “What are you doing?” I asked with a frown, disappointed. Surely we weren’t done already? I hadn’t even managed to sneak in a slap of my own. I dropped my arms to my side, waiting for his next move. Suddenly his left hand flashed in my peripheral vision and my arm instinctively came up to block it. At the same time he swept his leg out, catching my calf and knocking me off balance. With a screech and a thud, I landed on my back on the thick, deep red rug. “Ooof!” Air jolted from my lungs, leaving me winded and fighting hard for a deep breath. “Shit! Fuck! Liv, I’m sorry.” Nate was on his knees straddling my prone form before I could blink. His eyes were wide and fearful staring down into mine. “Are you okay?” All I could do was nod and swallow hard when he looked at me with such regret. My eyes closed at the feel of his hands smoothing my hair back and then trailing a hot path down my cheek. It was such a gentle, almost reverent touch. “God, do you know how beautiful you are?” he asked tenderly, his body lowering towards mine. I sucked in a deep breath, my heart pounding a frantic beat in my chest. He was so close, our lips only inches apart. His words and his slow, precise movements had my head spinning, but in this moment I knew I wanted him to kiss me. I was desperate for it.

EJ Shortall was born and raised in a suburb of London, England where she currently still resides.
Having worked in education for the better part of 12 years, EJ decided a change was needed. Following a moment of inspiration, she decided to put pen to paper not expecting anything to come from the few words she had. Soon those few words turned into her first novel, Silver Lining. Not content with just writing the one, she continued with book two and then three, and has many, many more ideas just waiting to be written.
She has always enjoyed reading, but found it was mostly just a holiday extravagance. Then she discovered a certain worldwide best seller, and her passion was reignited. Reading quickly became an obsession and she couldn’t devour books fast enough. The books on her shelves and reading devices range from sweet, Young Adult romances, to smouldering erotic encounters. If pushed for an answer she would say that sexy rock star romances are her favourite.
Aside from reading and writing, EJ also enjoys amateur photography, playing around with graphics and cake decorating.
“I am on one amazing roller coaster ride at the moment. I have met so many new and wonderful people, discovered new music gems to integrate into my stories, and learned so many new skills. I cannot wait to see where this journey takes me.”

My review
ARC provided for honest review by Sarah.
I must confess that I am new to E.J. Shortall's writing. But after reading Prepared to Fight, I'm adding her other books to my TBR list. I fell head over heels for this book. I could not Put. It. Down. The characters are so well written that it's impossible not to love them. And I love them because I connected with them on so many levels. I could definitely see myself in Olivia. While I'm not an architect, I do work in a male dominated field and I understand the challenges she faced based on gender.
I also loved that she was curvy, smart, and sassy. She changed her lifestyle not because she felt obligated, but because she wanted to be healthier. She wanted to be a better version of herself without losing the essence that made her her.
Umm, and who wouldn't jump at the chance to have a former MMA star as your personal trainer? Yes, please. Where do I sign up? But underneath the muscles lies a wounded heart. Circumstances have caused Nate to close his heart and only offer a physical connection. He has no need or want of an emotional connection and that suits Liv just fine because she's married to her career.
But what happens when these two lost souls find each other? A beauty of a book that will tug at your heartstrings and leave you wanting more.
Prepared to Fight has quickly catapulted itself on to my favorites of 2015 list.
