Dysfunctional empires were made to fall. I am Caesar. Broken and conflicted. I am a man who gives false goodness to those who crave it. I provide solace to the ones who beg to be saved, giving them the goodbyes they want. But, my quiet little world is about to be shattered by the whispers from heaven and hell. I am Mateo. Unlovable and unworthy. I am the boy everyone runs from. I keep love close to me in little jars of perfection, reminding me of a thousand goodbyes I never had to say, because I left them before they could leave me. I am Svetlana. Dirty and Used. Birthed into brutality while still trying to comprehend my version of normal. I am an injured lamb, eaten by filthy wolves day after day. Just as salvation seems like it's within reach, a goodbye from this awful world is all that I wish for. **Graphic content warning including detailed depiction of brutal, bloody acts. Physical and emotional abuse is also apparent throughout this book with graphic sex scenes, both consensual and non-sensual. Reader discretion is highly advised. Not suitable for readers under the age of eighteen or those who are easily offended by the above mentioned acts.**

Excerpt
“We need to go, Lettie doll.”
Why? Why does he call me that? Why does he make me feel like I want to keep living for tomorrow? I hate it! But I have no choice as I stare into his black eyes. They draw me in and suck the wind from my lungs, once begging for death, now craving life. The tearing I remembered from before with Pavel is instantly replaced with lust, throbbing between my legs as I feel the urge to fall to my knees and kiss his bloody boots to show him how much I praise him. He holds my heart in his hands. He knows this, but something tells me that his heart is in the balance, too.
Girls like me hold no power. I took life. I took one of his dolls because they held something I never will. Peace. Order. Death. I broke. The little, quiet girl who let herself be raped day after day let herself break into a million pieces as the hard dick pleasured her while her lover loved him more. I thought for sure I would be reprimanded for my actions, but a softness I haven’t seen before is present in his eyes. And maybe something else. Worry? Is that worry? Is his face red? I find myself wanting to comfort him, but he doesn’t like to be touched. My warm, trembling hands make him feel uncomfortable. The push and pull between life and death, love and loss, is making me mad.
-Svetlana, The Goodbye Man

Excerpt
Just as I contemplated taking a knife to my wrists, there are those that are doing that now. They throw themselves into the pits of darkness because wallowing in a sea of hatred has become too goddamn much for them. Victoria was one of them.
Suddenly, that lump in my throat is tightening and it is getting harder and harder to breathe. The sunrise of joy that I also craved to see as I put the disgust and danger behind me is almost as frightening as the final farewell to the constant pain. The glutton who wants discomfort will never alter what he needs. That is me. It is embedded in my body, every cell of my being. The masochism that I love to loathe clings onto me forever. I am a dangerous man and my life is destined for bad things. I feel it in my stomach as it clenches. My mind travels through time again as I stare Victoria in the face. All I want is one last smile while the face of her ghost haunts me, making my heart shatter into a trillion shards that will never be put back together, no matter how well Gwendolyn tries. I can certainly attempt to make her think that I am a changed man. She does make me feel more normal than I will ever be, but I must face that I am a player in the game that I hated so much. The last days of Victoria Matthews were filled with rape, torture, brutal violence, and sadness as I sit before a fucking picture box doting over the memories that I kept track of. Inside I hold the last known picture of her and I want to show it off. For what? Being the boy who could never say no to the ultimate puppet master himself.
Gwendolyn vs. the Band of Barren Hearts (Monster, #1)
A17iC-zbcVL._SL1500_
Monsters. They don’t hide in your nightmares. They steal you away from the good life and prevent you from living your dreams.
That’s where 17-year-old Gwendolyn Fitzpatrick found herself; surrounded by wicked fiends after everything she thought she had was gone in the blink of an eye. She was shuffled away with one bag of memories miles away to a pair of foster parents that hardly had her best interests at hand. Forced to obey and listen to her caregiver’s commands, Gwendolyn buries her old self and focuses on the pain to become one of them. A monster herself to seek vengeance. While yearning for her teeming point to come, Gwendolyn starts to connect with another 17-year-old foster boy living with her who calls himself Welch. Just when Gwendolyn starts to feel faith splice its way through the venom of pain, the connection she has with Welch is put in jeopardy as the harshness gets worse with each passing day. Will the two tattered spirits make it out alive?

Alpha Book Club's Review

“My heart is breaking all over again as the sheer bliss caves my mind, recollections of Gwendolyn’s first time flooding my mind like the worst kind of pain imaginable.  I see her tiny hands gripping the bed sheets and how her body responded to mine.”

5 totally heartbreaking stars.  This is such a devastating book.  It’s definitely not hearts and flowers by any means, but it’s so good and it’s refreshing that it’s not a p
erfect story with a perfect happy flower filled ending.  I loved this series!!  I read both books in one day.  This is a very dark read, with triggers for some.

Book two picks up from Welch’s point of view and how he’s coping after being separated from Gwendolyn for 10 years.  He’s acting out in a negative way, just trying to find some way to remember her.  While he is now living in Portland where they both said they wanted to be, he’s started a life there.  He’s a tattoo artist and while he is seeing someone, it’s no one he cares for.  I don’t want to give too much away at all.  This book is so beautifully written but it’s also so heartbreaking, reading what Welch went through as a child and then what happens as an adult.  Your heart just breaks for him as you read the story.  I will warn that this doesn’t have a hearts and flowers ending, so be prepared and grab your tissues!!  I’m very excited to read the next in the series!!
