Changing Scenes (Change Series, #2) by Jennifer Allis Provost

CHANGING SCENES by Jennifer Allis Provost
Series: Change Series #2
Genre: Contemporary Romance
Publisher: Limitless Publishing
- SYNOPSIS -
“Image isn’t everything
…or is it?”

For Astrid Janvier, image is everything…

Astrid is a world-renowned model, as famous for her strut as her startling green eyes. She’s modeled for the biggest names in the fashion world, and is regularly invited to parties in New York, London, and Paris. Thanks to a designer label addiction, she’s also broke, and takes a job as a cocktail waitress just to make rent. When her best friend Britt asks her to be her maid of honor at her upcoming wedding, their first task is to decide the menu.

Donnie Coehlo is a young, up-and-coming chef with a dinner menu to plan…

Donato—Donnie for short—is the head chef at Thirty-Nine and Twelve, a seafood bistro on the Connecticut shore. It’s a great accomplishment given his youthful age, but Donnie doesn’t brag. He just wants to find the right girl, settle down, and have a bunch of kids. When Astrid arrives at his restaurant, Donnie hopes she is the one. But would a high-priced model like Astrid be interested in a regular guy like him?

As Astrid’s life crumbles around her, and Donnie makes a terrible choice, Astrid learns the two of them are irrevocably tied together.

Will their connection be enough for Astrid to leave her high-fashion life behind, and accept what Donnie has to offer? Or will she chase her dreams as a model, leaving Donnie as part of her past?

“So, what’s this adventure all about?”

“We’re going shopping,” he said as he pulled away from the curb. “You like shopping?”

If he only knew. “Doesn’t everyone? But I don’t think anything’s open right now.”

Donnie glanced at the clock above the dashboard. “Actually, this place’ll open up in about half an hour.”

“Great,” I said. “I’m going to be like one of those girls on the true crime show, kidnapped by a cute guy and sold into slavery.”

“You think I’m cute?”

I raised my mug, hoping to blame my warm cheeks on the steam. “I’m sure they’ll get a good looking actor to portray you. Ratings and all.”

“Ratings.” We stopped for a traffic signal, the streetlight above making the interior of the van bright as day. “You’re not wearing a drop of makeup, are you?”

“Um, no.” In fact, this was the most casual I’d been in public in years. My hair was pulled back in a bun, and I was wearing jeans, an orange turtleneck sweater, and a navy blue down vest. And cowboy boots; one must be stylish, even in the cold. “Is that all right? You didn’t say where we were going.”

“It’s fine,” he said, his dark eyes holding me. “I like seeing the real you.” We watched each other for a moment, then the light turned green, and Donnie returned his attention to the road.

“All right, go ahead and ask me,” I said.

“Ask you what?”

“About my eyes.”

Donnie glanced at me, his forehead wrinkled. “What about your eyes? You have x-ray vision or something?”

I blinked. “You’re really not curious?”

“Seriously, babe, you’ve lost me,” he said. “Help a guy out and tell me what I’m supposed to be curious about.”

“Everyone wants to know if they’re green because of contacts, or if I have some crazy white ancestor,” I explained.

“I got lots of crazy white ancestors,” Donnie said. “It’s not all it’s cracked up to be.”

I laughed, and watched my reflection in the passenger window. “I’m sorry, I shouldn’t have assumed that about you.”

“S’okay. Besides, I already know everything I need to about your eyes.”

“And what’s that?”

“That they’re gorgeous.” My jaw dropped, but before I could say anything he continued, “And anyway, it’s not like the fish’ll care what color they are.”

I shut my mouth with a clack. “Fish?”

“Yeah. Didn’t I tell you? We’re going to the fish market.”

“At one in the morning?”

He shrugged. “It’s when it opens.”

I read this book as an ARC and my first piece of advice is to read book one, Changing Teams before you read Changing Scenes. I did not read book one as this was an ARC, and I had a lot of unanswered questions as there were a lot of references to book one that are not explained, as it is assumed you read the book. Book 2 continues with best friend Astrid, a beautiful well known up and coming model living a expensive life in New York City; yet,  living off her credit cards. She meets chef Donato; aka Donnie, researching a restaurant for her best friend Britt’s wedding (main character from book 1) and as much as Donnie is her opposite, they do say opposites attract. Their first, second, and third date take place at a fish market buying produce for the restaurant  Thirty-Nine and Twelve where Donnie works, and this is where they fall in love. They have to overcome a few obstacles, long distance as Donnie lives in Connecticut, as well as Astrid’s extravagant lifestyle. But the sweet old fashioned gentleman Donato proves to be is enough to break the barriers between the two love birds. This was a sweet love story with no surprise plot twists. I do want to go back and read the first book, as it sounds interesting based on all the references.

Mission L.A. Complete

We’re here…and it’s the best feeling in the world.
As soon as I walked in those double doors, I immediately felt at home. That has never happened to me before. The farmhouse felt like home because it was all I had, but this place has Dad, Cass, and me written all over it. It’s a rocker’s mansion for sure, and Dad already told me some stories about the wild parties they used to have in here. I enjoyed hearing about how completely off the walls Cass and he were. It makes me think maybe he’ll forgive me for the shit I plan to do once I’m legal…or not so legal.
He’s loosening up a lot now that we’re in L.A. He’s even treating me like an equal in a lot of ways. I guess he’s finally realizing I’m close to becoming an adult. Also, he said he plans to go out with Cass a lot while we’re here. Score for me! The less parental supervision, the better.
I’m not sure how to feel about meeting Stephan Lowe’s family tomorrow. According to Ana, Steph’s partner is Alfonzo Abate, a major action film star. He’s easily an A-list actor, and I’ve watched and obsessed over all his movies. His teenage son Giovanni is an actor, too. He was a supporting actor on one of my favorite tween-teen shows, Jackson and Julia, until it got cancelled last year. He is constantly in the news, and girls everywhere obsess over him. My palms sweat and my throat dries up just thinking about him. I mean, this guy is swoon-worthy, and I’m about to meet him tomorrow. That has me terrified. What am I going to say to two actors I’ve worshipped for the past few years of my life? Especially one my age?
I can see it now—
“Hi, I’m Mads. You’re gorgeous. I want to marry you. I know I’m the Basket Baby, but maybe we can look past that. I’m even willing to start over on a deserted island together and forget either of us has a name. We can just sit on the beach day and night in nothing but our birthday suits and let the world fade away for the rest of our lives. Sound good? Great. I’m on my way to the courthouse to get emancipated right now.”
I’m dying laughing over here. That’s so unrealistic it’s almost not funny.
Almost.
Anyway, now that I know who I’m meeting, I’m considering letting Ana give me a full-scale makeover tomorrow. She’s been wanting to do that for years, and now we’ve finally got the perfect opportunity. Plus, it’s kind of necessary. I’m looking at the ends of my hair, and…yep, I’ve got split ends. They’re all over the place. Definitely getting a haircut, and I might color it, too, even though that’s wayyy outside my comfort zone.
Here goes nothing. Hopefully I won’t come back bald. That’s my secret fear when entering a salon.
Ttyl,
Mads

“Hello.” I froze as Jude’s voice carried up the stairway, then jumped up from my position on the floor in our bedroom and scrambled for the door. Before I opened it, I turned back to face the kids, who were playing tug-of-war with the unnamed puppy.
“Stay here.” They both nodded, and I slipped out of the room, closing the door behind me. Jude had just reached the top of the steps, and he looked up with a smile.
“Where are the kids?”
“They’re playing in our room,” I said as I approached him.
“What’s wrong?” he asked.
“Nothing,” I assured him as I continued to walk. He cocked an eyebrow at me, and my stomach dropped. He was seeing right through me. I was such a bad liar.
“The kids are busy. Wanna sneak downstairs and have a quickie?” I wagged my eyebrows, but his facial expression did not change in the slightest.
“Now I know you’re full of shit. You’re actually attempting to distract me with sex,” he said with a grin. I was just about to argue when the puppy barked.
“What was that?” he asked.
“Uh…”
My stomach was flipping around anxiously, and I didn’t even get to figure out a way to break the news before everything broke loose. The bedroom door came open behind me, and I heard the puppy’s claws tapping against the hardwood floor as Zoey and Matthew followed him. Squealing and laughter filled the hallway as I remained locked in place. I avoided looking at Jude. In fact, I stared down the floor instead.
“Are those my boxers?” Jude asked, and I looked up. He was pointing at the puppy, who was sitting back on his butt looking up at Jude. Hanging from his mouth were a red pair of Jude’s Calvin Klein boxers I had just purchased last week.
“Warrior likes to play tug-of-war with them,”
Matthew announced as he pulled on the other end of the red material.
“See, you just hook your hand through this handle, and he pulls back.”
Matthew slipped his little hand through the front opening in the boxers.
“His name is not Warrior,” Zoey argued.
“We still have to draw for his name, remember? Callie said so.”
I could feel Jude’s eyes boring in to me. I knew he was waiting for me to look up, but I was avoiding eye contact.
“What do you think we should name him, Uncle Jude?” Matthew asked.
“I like Warrior, but Zoey said Buddy or Charlie. I don’t like those.”
The kids began to argue over the name of our new puppy, and of course I continued to keep my head down as my heart raced with the idea that Jude may be angry.
“Callie,” Jude said, and my stomach lurched. He didn’t sound mad, yet he didn’t sound happy, either. Silence set in, and I knew all eyes were on me. I took in a deep breath and closed my eyes tightly.
“I never should have let them convince me to go into the pet store, but before I knew what hit me, they were laughing and playing with this cute little guy.”
I looked up and found Jude staring back at me, an unreadable expression on his face. “They ganged up on me, and they gave me that look. You know the one.”
t was then I noticed the smile tugging at his lips. “Are you ever going to be able to tell them no?”
Jude asked as he stepped around the puppy. I shook my head. I knew the moment they turned on me and gave me those big, sad eyes, I was putty in their hands. I was unable to disappoint them.
