Yellow Dog Blues Excerpt
One
My hand shakes as I open the front door to The Club.
I have no idea what I’m doing here. Am I really contemplating selling my body for money?
I consider turning around and trying to figure something else out, but I’ve exhausted nearly every option I can imagine.
My next door neighbor, Cali, referred me to The Club when she found me locked out of my apartment with an eviction notice plastered across my door.
Chad, my boyfriend of six years, decided to join the Peace Corps without telling me. He finally admitted he was leaving when I found him packing for his flight to Africa. He left me with an apartment I had no way to pay for and several months of utility bills that were past due.
Despite all of my best efforts to secure gainful employment I haven’t been able to find a job. Not even a nibble. Not even after a nationwide search.
I guess earning a Master’s degree in Creative Writing was much less marketable than I ever imagined it would be.
Out of complete and utter desperation I dialed the number on the black business card Cali gave me. The gruff woman who answered the phone asked me only two questions: how old I was and if I was a blonde. Then she told me to meet her at three pm, quickly spat out the address and hung up on me.
So here I am at five minutes to three, my heart practically pounding out of my chest, trying to convince myself to go inside.
You have no job and nowhere to live, I remind myself. Not to mention a six figure student loan that’s about to come due in a few months. How I’ll ever be able to afford those monthly payments is something I can’t even contemplate at the moment.
I take in a deep breath and force myself to go inside.
As nondescript as the exterior of the building is, the interior is in sharp contrast. It’s rich looking with dark wood everywhere. The décor reminds me one of those men’s clubs from the movies. One of those places that only admits rich old men and exudes an atmosphere of excessive wealth and old money.
The Club probably caters to the same demographic.
There’s a young woman standing behind a large mahogany desk. I expect her to give me some type of greeting, but she just stares at me with her big doe eyes.
As I get closer I realize just how tall she is. She towers over all five foot four of me. It would surprise me if she wasn’t some kind of model. She’s rail thin and has that emaciated look about her.
“I have an appointment with Claudia.”
I’m surprised that she doesn’t check an appointment book, or even an electronic calendar, until I realize there is absolutely nothing to check. The desk is completely bare.
“Follow me,” she says.
She doesn’t give me any time to reply. She takes off down a long hallway at a pace so brisk I practically have to run to keep up with her.
When we get to the door at the end of the hallway she turns to me and says, “Go inside. Claudia is waiting for you.”
Before I have a chance to reply she takes off back down the hallway leaving me alone with the drumbeat of my pounding heart.
It takes several impossibly long moments for me to gather enough courage to open the door to Claudia’s office.
I bite my bottom lip to keep myself from gasping when I enter the large space. Everything in the room is completely white. Even Claudia herself is dressed in an all-white outfit. The decor is in sharp contrast to the heavy and dark reception area.
She looks me up and down before she instructs me to take a seat.
Claudia’s voice is husky, like someone who has smoked cigarettes for twenty years. She looks like an older version of her receptionist. She’s rail thin, and could have probably been a model a few decades ago.
I sit down in the only seat in the room that isn’t occupied. It’s on the other side of Claudia’s desk directly in front of her.
“I have a unique situation with a new client,” she tells me. “Normally we require clients to pay for at least six months in advance. This client insists on paying on a month-to-month basis. I like my girls to have a little more job security, at least six months per contract, but he’s willing to pay extra. You’re a cute blonde with a hot little body. I’ll have no problem making another more stable arrangement if things don’t work out with this client.”
She definitely gets right to the point.
I already feel dizzy with emotion. The only guy I’ve ever been with is my ex-boyfriend. We met our freshman year of college and were together for six years. Now Claudia is talking about the possibility of selling me to not one, but two different men. I’ve barely wrapped my head around the idea of being paid to be with one guy.
“He’s willing to fly you home immediately if things don’t work out.”
“Fly home?” I mutter.
“The client is located in Hawaii. You’ll have to sign a non-disclosure agreement before we can go any further with the negotiations because you will recognize his name.”
“Okay…” I gulp. My head is spinning. I’ve never been outside of the Midwest.
She pushes a piece of paper in front of me along with a pen. I quickly glance over the document and wonder if I should actually take the time to read it. When I look up at Claudia her scowl says don’t waste any time. So I grab the pen and scribble my name on the bottom of the non-disclosure agreement.
Once Claudia snatches the paper from my hand, she says, “My client is Maverick.”
I choke.
Did she just say Maverick? As in the musician who had the biggest selling song my junior year of high school?
His music topped the charts for months. He was so popular with teens that Hollywood producers cast him in a movie with America’s sweetheart, Katie Lawrence. The two had zero chemistry together and they blamed the box office bomb on Maverick. Then his second album came out and it failed to gain traction. His downward spiral continued when his movie star fiancée dumped him after he made national headlines with three porn stars in a hot tub. The final blow was his DUI arrest. He completely disappeared after that.
That’s who she wants me to have sex with? A washed-up pop star? When he rose to fame the media portrayed him as an A-1 asshole.
She must see the hesitation in my eyes.
“He’s willing to pay you eight thousand dollars for the month.”
That’s a lot of money and I don’t have any other options at the moment.
How bad could it possibly be? My neighbor, Cali, made it sound like I’d be his mistress. Mistresses in movies are treated well. Candlelight dinners in secluded restaurants. Weekends in lovely hotels. And plenty of diamond jewelry.
At least he’s not old. Well not that old. Thirty.

The confusion that had left him with a sad puppy dog expression morphed into pale shock, and then red-faced anger. “I know you’re not blaming Chicago on me.”
“Not exactly.”
“Breaking that off was your idea.”
“You sure as shit didn’t argue with me.”
“What was I supposed to do?”
“I don’t know.” She threw her hands up in the air. “Argue with me, maybe. Object. That is, if you had any objections at all.”
“Of course I did.” He moved closer, but stopped when she backed away for each step he took. “Shit, Pen. It about killed me to watch you walk away for your flight.”
Never in her life had the airline terminal been so long as when she’d walked away that day. She’d known he’d been on the other end, not budging as she made her way to the checkpoint. “But it didn’t. And it didn’t kill me, either. Obviously we made the right choice.”
“Then why does it still hurt?”
“It doesn’t.” Her lips twitched beyond her control at the lie and she spun around to hide the tear that slipped down. “You just think it does because you saw my song. Which you weren’t supposed to do. I asked you for one promise. It didn’t mean anything. It’s a stupid song.”
“Why hide it from me if it means nothing?” His hand closed around her upper arm.
“Because we still can’t do this. We still shouldn’t. This conversation can’t happen. Not now. Not two days before my audition.” She cupped her hands over her face in an effort to form blinders against him. “Please.”
“No. You wanted a damn argument, you’re getting one.”
“You know this would never work. Just drop it. Let me do my audition, argue later.”
“No.” He grasped both of her wrists and pulled her hands away from her face. “Not this time. We’re doing this now.”
“Then my arguments are all the exact same.” With each word her heart jumped and cracked more. “We can’t ever make it work.”
“Why the hell not?”
“You travel all the damn time. During hockey season you’re away more than you are home. If I get this I’ll be in Philly. You could get picked up by a team god knows here, maybe even Canada, or,” she shivered out her disgust, “California. Long distance doesn’t work, especially with how much and how hard we both work.”
“We stayed close when you went overseas. This could work. I’m not buying it.”
“You’re a distraction.”
“That’s the Wicked Witch talking.”
“The Wicked Witch has a point. You are a distraction.”
“Good.”
She backed up a step, but couldn’t get far because he still had her wrists. “Let me go.”
Without argument, he did as she asked. He shook his head. “You need a distraction. You can’t live, breathe, and eat work.”
“You do.”
“No. I go out. And I have you. You’re my distraction.”
“I can’t fail again. I have to do this, Cage. And I can’t do this with you.”
“Tell me it’s what you want. More than anything. More than the songs you’ve been writing. More than those videos.” He tucked a finger under her chin and stepped right up close to her. “More than me.”
“I’ve wanted it since I was eight.” Her voice squeaked, but she didn’t tear her gaze from his. Tears blurred her vision enough that she could lie about the last part of his demand. “I have to do this. I have to see what I can do with this. You’ve gotten your dream, or at least close enough to taste it. Let me have mine.”
His finger left her jaw fast as though he’d been burned. He went so far as to take a step back. “That’s unfair.”
“Maybe it is, but you’re thinking with your dick.”
“I object to that too. This isn’t about that.”
“It’s always about that. You’re a meathead hockey player.” She took the chance his distance of offense afforded her and scrambled around the bed. “We never should have complicated our friendship with sex. I thought I could handle it, but I couldn’t.”
Across the room next to her pink suitcase, he stood in silence for a few minutes. His hands clenched into fists while he hung his head. “So you do love me.”
“I have always loved you, idiot. You’re my best friend and…” She tried to say more, but all the words tangled in her throat refusing to leave. If she spoke them everything would get worse, so much worse. She couldn’t handle this now; she should make a break for the door again.
His head snapped up when her voice trailed off. “And?”
She shook her head so hard she got dizzy and had to lower her gaze to the floor. The words that had choked off her voice erupted in a gut-wrenching sob.
“Son of a bitch, screw this shit.” Before she could even catch her breath or try to speak again he was in front of her. His warm lips closed over hers as he caressed away tears with his thumbs.
Her mind railed against the move, telling her to push him away and leave, but her soul had a whole different idea. All the fears fell aside, and she opened up to him with one demanding swipe of his tongue.
She trembled against her own doubts, and then curved into his hard body eagerly. With a mind of their own, her hands danced up his chest until her fingers were able to bury into his thick curls and tug him close.
He backed her into the wall and hiked her legs around his waist. The last lingering stubborn doubt fled as the hard promise of his desire pressed into her heat and they both moaned.

Logic and doubts would have to wait until the morning.

What Others Are Saying

The story of Penelope and Cage is breathtaking. You will not only be wanting to laugh but you will feel their anxiety. The details are written well and leave nothing to the imagination. It is a very fast paced and easy read that will play through your head like a movie. This series will keep you interested and highly entertained. Each book is placed around a holiday. The title goes along with each holiday. This book Heartstrings and Hockey Pucks goes with Valentine's Day. Each book can be a stand alone and will not need to be read in order. ★★★★★ by Amanda Hamilton

Beautiful little story about how Penelope and Cage worked through their problems of his career, her dream career, her mother's interference and the issues of a long distance relationship to a happily ever after. Loved these two characters and the storyline. Just enough challenges to hold the interest and to help Pen grow a strong backbone and stand up for her own desires. ★★★★★ by Dee Archer

Heartstings and Hockey Pucks is one of my favorite in the Lake Point Series. One of the things that I Love about this series is how true to life it is. Outside forces can always color your opinion about things and the way Sarah portrays this is phenomenal. I won't give the plot away but the twits and turns these characters take felt real and genuine. Would definitely recommend! ★★★★★ by Jessi F

About the Author

Sarah Cass' world is regularly turned upside down by her three special needs kids and loving mate, so she breaks genre barriers; dabbling in horror, straight fiction and urban fantasy. She loves historicals and romance, and characters who are real and flawed, so she writes to understand what makes her fictional people tick. And she lives for a happy ending - eventually. And enough twists to make it look like she enjoys her title of Queen of Trauma Drama a little too much.

An ADD tendency leaves her with a variety of interests that include singing, dancing, crafting, cooking, and being a photographer. She fights through the struggles of the day, knowing the battles are her crucible; she may emerge scarred, but always stronger. The rhythms to her activities drive her words forward, pushing her through the labyrinths of the heart and the nightmares of the mind, driving her to find resolutions to her characters' problems.

While busy creating worlds and characters as real to her as her own family, she leads an active online life with her blog, Redefining Perfect, which gives a real and sometimes raw glimpse into her life and art. You can most often find her popping out her 140 characters in Twitter speak, and on Facebook.

Meeting Alex was one of the best things that could have happened to Shane. They were at the beginning of a wonderful relationship when the unthinkable happened and Shane had to leave. The consequences of his past mistakes could not be hidden any longer.

“It is a heartwarming story that leaves the reader knowing that things really can work out for the best, and love truly does prevail.” ~5 Star Review (by wtcdean on Amazon)
Finally looking at the texts that came in throughout the day, I see one from Steph from early this morning.
Looks like you’ve been replaced
There is a photo attached of Shane on the lawn with Stormy. She is trying to grab something from behind his back and he’s laughing. He has a perfect smile. Seeing him so happy warms my heart. His dark eyes are so sexy and he looks damn good on my lawn, with my dog and… in my shirt. That is my shirt, right? I can feel little Alex starting to twitch just thinking about how that happened. He fills it out better than I do.
I wore that on Thursday. Why would he put on my dirty shirt? I know why I would put on a guy’s dirty shirt but that couldn’t be his reason… Well, maybe I was wrong about that country boy.
Pulling a couple bottles from the mini bar, I lie back on the bed debating whether to call him or not. I empty the small whisky bottle into a can of Coke that was only half full and grab my phone. He’s wearing my shirt for god’s sake. A straight guy wouldn’t do that.
Before I lose my nerve, I thumb out a quick text to Shane.
I see you met Stephanie.
Not two minutes later, I get a response.
Yeah. She seems nice.
Nice, hunh? That doesn’t give me much. I’ll have to go the more direct route.
She is nice. And single. She’d come over if you called her. She probably even has a hot girlfriend 4 a one nighter if you’re looking 4 something casual.
No way for him to be vague about that. If he responds, I should have my answer.
Thanks but not really my style. LOL
Damn, he’s good.
Which part? The hot girlfriend or the one nighter.
Please say girls, please say girls, please say girls.
Both.
Thank you, sweet baby Jesus!
I guess we have more in common than a love of dogs.
Okay. That was lame. I need another drink. Opening up a bottle of vodka, I drink the shot straight. Just enough to warm me up. It’s been several minutes so I might have spooked him. I try him again.
Is this a bad time?
No. Just took Stormy out one more time and now we’re in bed.
Oops. Forgot to ask about my dog. The whole reason he’s at my house. What a bad daddy I am! Ah well, all the more reason to find her a new daddy. Whoa, I think I feel those shots already.
So are you seeing anyone right now?
No. Very single.
Maybe we can get a drink sometime next week?
Sounds good.
So you’re in bed now? In my bed?
LOL. Yes.
Me too.
Is trying to sext too trashy for our first flirt session? I’m gonna have to assume yes so I’ll let the poor boy go. As hard as it is to do it. And as hard as I am for him.
I’ll let you get comfortable and go to sleep.
OK. Good night Alex.
Good night Shane. BTW, you look fucking hot in my shirt.
Okay, I couldn’t resist that last part.
