The second book in The Boots My Mother Gave Me series, Sole Sister picks up several years later, continuing the story of Harley LeBeau and her rebellious sister Katrina ‘Kat’ LeBeau.

Relocating to Nashville to be closer to Harley and Miah, Kat aspires to launch her Sole Sister fashion line. A gutsy and impromptu plan suddenly lands her on the cover of The Ville Spill—the local celebrity gossip rag—alongside country music’s latest heartthrob, giving Sole Sister the push it needs. But Kat quickly learns that not all press is good press.

Years removed from an abusive childhood and teenage pregnancy, the past that Kat never talks about continues to seep into her life and relationships. Still struggling with the images of finding her father after his suicide, Kat forges ahead, vowing to avoid past mistakes. To focus on her career and responsibilities as a single mother, she swears off the disappointments of love. The first man she ever loved, her father, broke her heart. The first boy she ever fell in love with, her daughter’s father, broke her heart.

What Kat didn’t plan on was Nashville SWAT Officer Connor Reese. She and Connor have more pulling them together than keeping them apart. Kat finds herself in familiar territory when her plan to steer clear of heartache is derailed after spending a night in his arms. Will facing her past help to secure her future? Will Connor offer her a second chance at life and love? Or will her heart break yet again?

Staying true to its predecessor, Sole Sister explores the dynamics of strength in sisterhood, the ongoing conflict and unconditional love between a mother and daughter, and the courage to become more than one’s past.

excerpt

I knew I was standing in a room in the hospital, but my eyes were sure its sterile white walls were trying to morph into noxious, blood-stained wood. I knew I was inside and warm, but a bitterly cold February chill of eight years ago sent goosebumps pricking at the hairs on the back of my neck. I knew that Connor was lying there in that hospital bed, but my mind played cruel tricks on me. It flickered like a short circuit, between Connor’s prevailing face and my lifeless father’s.

“No. No. No!” I heard my strangled high-pitched cry, caught up in the fog of past and present.

“Kat!” Connor growled, forcefully. “Look at me. Right here.” He loudly tapped his index and middle fingers of his right hand just below his eyes.

There he was. There they were—mystical, exotic, intense pale blues.

“Breathe,” he said again, holding my eyes in his.

And, breathe, I did. In and out, deeply, meditatively, until my warped and wobbly funhouse mirror vision, that was no fun at all, cleared, the blood-stained wood and my father’s face disappearing. Nice way to not make a scene, Kat! Get it together.

“Sorry,” I muttered, disturbed at my uncooperative mind.

“You shouldn’t be here.” He diverted his eyes from me once more.

“I don’t know why I went there. It won’t happen again,” I snipped, not at him, but at myself, a reminder.

“You still shouldn’t be here. I don’t want you…” He growled, checking himself. “Look, I don’t want to be one more man in your life who lashes out at you…”

“Well, then, don’t,” I interrupted, pleading with my eyes. I don’t know what good I thought that would do, seeing how he wouldn’t even look at me. “I’ve stood in a lot worse for a lot less.” I thought about my father and Megan’s father, and the crap I put up with from them. Connor was not crap. He was nothing like them. “I’m not leaving.”

ALPHA BOOK CLUB REVIEW

“Forgiveness - it’s so elusive, isn’t it.  Felt so strongly one moment, only to wane out of reach the next.  But to not forgive, to hold onto that condemnation, it seeps into every aspect of our life, our being like a noxious gas through the crack of a door, somehow sabotaging forward progression, crippling all that is and can’t be good.”

5 emotional stars.  This book is so beautiful and beautifully written.  The characters are so well written and the story flows so well.  It’s hard to pull yourself away from the book once you start.

First of all you have to read book one in order to read this book, it’s a continuation from book one.  The book has a roller coaster ride of events, you have to hang on.  It’s emotional and uplifting all at the same time.  The book starts with Katrina and her needing to decide what she wants to do with her life.  After being abused for years, she’s now a shell of her previous self.  But in order to succeed with her Sole Sister fashion line, she has to figure out how to get back to herself.  This book was amazing and so beautiful.  I highly recommend it!!!
